Abstract

The role of safety belts in saving lives in highway accidents is stressed and safety belt usage legislation is urged. It is noted that the technology necessary to reduce the death rate is available but that national and individual motivation is needed. The arguments against safety belts are shown to be weak, and it is suggested that there are adequate precedents in law to dispel the notion that any compulsory use of belts would be an unconstitutional infringement of personal liberties.
