Abstract

In this poster a description is given of a multi-activity helmet for children, named KIDO, designed by the Netherlands TNO Road-Vehicles Research Institute scientists. This helmet can be used in a wide range of speed-related activities such as skateboarding, biking, skiing, and skating. The newly designed helmet is open at the top, and has an integral chin guard to protect the face. The open top gives good ventilation, and protection against certain injury types. With the open top and the chin guard, the helmet has the potential for preventing the greatest number of moderate and serious head injuries in the greatest number of children without compromising on important issues such as comfort and style. The styling of the KIDO has received special attention. The helmet does not look like a scaled down version of an adult helmet, but fits nicely in the magical fantasy world children like to play in.
