The third edition of the Children Traffic Accident Atlas aims at analysing official statistics of road traffic accidents of children aged 0-14 years who are injured as pedestrians, cyclists or car occupants in the period 2015-2019. For this purpose, key indicators of accidents and mobility are assessed and visualised cartographically according to the comparative levels of the German federation, federal states, administrative districts/autonomous cities and municipalities. The results support the targeted development and implementation of traffic safety measures.
In addition to the key indicators ‘number of casual¬ties per 100,000 inhabitants of the same age’ (Verunglücktenbelastung, VB) and ‘rate of change in VB’ (Veränderungsrate Verunglücktenbelastung, VäR VB), the current Atlas also reports regionalised data on ‘kilometres travelled’ (Verkehrsleistung, VL) and thus also ‘number of casualties per 1 billion kilometers’ (Verunglücktenrate, VR) for the first time. As a further fundamental innovation, the analyses at municipal level are based on the Regional Statistical Spatial Typology (Regionalstatistische Raumtypologie, RegioStaR 7) of the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (Bundesministerium für Verkehr u. digitale Infrastruktur, BMVI) from 2018. At the federal state and district level, the focus is also set on accidents with seriously or fatally injured children.
