Abstract

The knee bolster is an important restraint feature for frontal crash occupant protection. The energy absorption characteristic of the knee bolster largely determines the peak femur loads due to knee impact. FMVSS-208 allows a maximum femur load of 2250 lbf for a 30 mph frontal crash. This paper illustrates an approach to knee bolster structural crash analysis using the MADYMO finite element module combined with the occupant kinematics of the MADYMO rigid body module. (A)
