Abstract

On the basis of a conceptual model (See also C 46) a number of bottlenecks has been analyzed with regard to recreational walking and cycling in rural areas, on recreational level. The most important bottlenecks are as follows: (1) traffic nuisance; (2) missing of tracks with free location; (3) insufficient accessibility; and (4) inadequate information. As regards recreational cycling, the following three groups of consumers can be distinguished: (1) discoverers; (2) persons belonging to this group select another area, when they have been convinced that this `new' area is more attractive than the region they have already used for cycling; and (3) persons who cycle only in areas they are familiar with. An useful method has been developed to find out the most important bottlenecks, whereby financial aspects have been taken into account.
