Abstract

The so-called quench-phenomenon is an important cause of hydrocarbon emission from petrol engines. A quantitative description of this phenomenon is given, using a new engine parameter: The quenchvolume. It was found that the quench volume consists of two parts: the wallvolume, varying with engine load and ignition timing and the squish volume varying with these parameters and engine speed.
