Abstract

This paper describes a test linkage that was conducted in 1987. The hospitalised traffic injuries recorded by both the Dutch National Medical Registration (LMR) and by the Dutch Department of Traffic Accident Registration (VOR) were linked to each other. The primary aim of the linkage is to supplement the VOR injury data with the LMR data. Cyclists and young people are especially underrepresented in the VOR system. The test shows that the linkage of the LMR and VOR files is possible. However, about 60% of the records (hospitalized traffic victims) of the selected VOR file could be linked to the selected LMR file. This number could partly be increased by improving the quality of the characteristics used, among other things, for the linkage. These characteristics include: (1) the cause of injury; (2) admission to hospital or not; (3) the traffic victim's birth date; (4) the hospital code; (5) sex; (6) the accident date; and (7) the hospitalization date. It is recommended to further investigate whether all the hospitalised traffic victims are indeed recorded by the LMR system. It should not be decided to permanently link the LMR and VOR files. However, it is recommended to carry out another linkage in order to guarantee a better use of both the LMR and VOR data.
