The purpose of this literature survey is to collect research results in order to renew the guidelines for municipal traffic safety activities, mainly traffic engineering techniques for urban environments and the problems of unprotected road users. A new method is recommended in the selection of locations that would require safety measures. The selection would be based on the classification of the safety level according to a method described in general guidelines for planning urban traffic networks, TRAD. Four different strategies for selection of locations to be treated by applying safety measures are analyzed. Summaries of studies concerning the effects of different safety measures are presented.
