Abstract

Road traffic accidents of novice drivers are mostly attributed to the psychological characteristics of young persons. The following study was done through the Interuniversitary Laboratory of Education Sciences and Communication, commanded by the PREDIT. It focuses on the behaviours of 53 subjects, young novice drivers, placed in several theoretical and practical situations (real-life situations on the road). Six months after being issued their license and with an experience of about 3,000 km, more than one third of novice drivers find themselves in great difficulty. These difficulties as well as risk-taking are closely due to the implementation's absence of adapted mental operations. The recognition of cognitive factors' importance in risky behaviours among novice drivers would enable to improve drivers' training and to develop new researches in this field. (Author/publisher)
