Abstract

The study was directed toward improving the onderstandinghow post-crash column compression and steering wheel de-formation relate to the driver interaction with an energyabsorbing steering system during automotive collisions.Analysis of 154 frontal towaway accidents confirmed thatsteering wheel deformation and column compression may beindicative of occupant logding, bot they do not necessari-ly indicate the severity of the driver interaction withthe steering system.'
