Abstract

At Wiggenhall Road overbridge, spill-through abutments are supported on piled foundations. The pile group for each abutment comprised four rows of eleven steel universal bearing piles which were driven through a soft alluvium layer about 15m thick into stiff Kimmeridge Clay. The pile foundation was designed to accomodate the lateral loading produced by the 9m high approach embankment. Field instrumentation was installed to monitor the lateral movements of the ground and piles together with the bending moments and axial loads developed in the piles. The results of the measurements were compared with predictions from current design methods for the unsurcharged ground.
