Abstract

Since the 1980s, there has been considerable experience with traffic management at the local level, especially speed management, in Australia and New Zealand and many other countries. To take advantage of this experience, and to promote best practice approaches to LATM, Austroads commissioned the ARRB Group to prepare a new guideline on the topic, and in late 2004 the Interim Guide to Traffic Engineering Practice on Local Area Traffic Management was released. The Austroads Guide was prepared to encourage a rational and orderly approach to LATM, and to provide technical guidance and further reference material for practitioners who may become involved in LATM. The Guide is a comprehensive revision and updating of the previous edition, which was published in 1988. It now includes an extensive section dealing with the selection of LATM devices and another dealing with the design of LATM schemes, and in particular speed-based design. (a).
