Abstract

A review of published literature was conducted to get an overview of the UK light commercial vehicle (LCV) market and to identify gaps in current knowledge of LCVs. The report covers the following areas: LCV market profiling (LCV categorisation, licensed numbers and registration trends, LCV growth profiles, propulsion and fuel types), LCV manufacturers (specificationtrends, sales profiles), LCV users (construction, utilities, mail and courier express parcel services, contract hire and rental, pharmaceutical, public sector, E-grocery shopping, telecommunications, breakdown services), fleet management techniques (procurement, maintenance, fuel management, driver training, driver attitudes, telematics, disposal methods), maintenance and support networks (breakdown services, costs of repair, fuel card companies, insurance, tyre management, MOT enforcement, auctions), LCV regulations (drier licensing, LCV licensing, enforcers and regulators, LCV taxation), the European market structure, LCV accidents and safety (statistics, crash tests, health and safety, corporate manslaughter), environmental considerations (emissions testing, carbon dioxide emissions, emission trends, fuel efficiency, alternative fuels, green fleet management, media awareness). Recommendations are made on data collection, manufacturer dialogue, LCV user workshops, running costs, key performance indicators, accident statistics, health and safety, insurance, alternative fuels, LCV sales route, regulations, and EU reliance.
