Abstract

A driver's visual perception and cognitive processing affects his ability to control a vehicle safely. Human eyesight declines with age. Use of intelligent road studs (IRS) enhances visual guidance by day and by night. The benefits of IRS are described: a reduction in the risk of accidents, increased driver awareness of hazards, better lateral vehicle positioning, improved delineation in poor weather, and an alternative to expensive street lighting. An Astucia IRS guidance installation allows the driver up to 900 m of visible road layout, irrespective of headlight efficiency. The system can detect poor visibility at road level and activate light emitting diodes (LEDs) in fog. IRS can be used to improve safety at pedestrian crossings, traffic light intersections and at level crossings. For the covering abstract see ITRD E115762.
