Abstract

The firm of R.V. Anderson Associates Limited was retained by the Regional Municipality of York to undertake a class environmental assessment for improving road capacity along a 3 km length of arterial roadway. The objective of this paper is to outline the various public participation techniques that were utilized to obtain input and to influence the decision making process for a class environmental assessment. The paper is divided into the following main topics: Overview of the Class Environmental Assessment for Municpal Road Projects in Ontario highlighting the minimum mandatory public contacts and participation; General description of the project; Outline of how the process was applied to the project was applied to the project and the structure of the recommended public participation program; The input received from the public and how it affected the study direction and results.
