Abstract

The experience of moto-taxis launched in Cotonou (Benin) in the 1980s has not disappeared in the 1990s, instead it has been developed further and extended to other cities, particularly Lomé (Togo) and Douala (Cameroon). This paper presents the various characteristics of this transport mode, and its return on investment for its operators. Also discussed is employment possibilities for young people as well as environmental degradation. (A) The English title of the paper is: "Taxi-motos experience in western Africa coping with economic, social, and environmental concerns".
