Abstract

Older driver crashes are expected to increase dramatically in the years ahead as the population ages. This paper outlines licensing procedures in Australian states and territories and discusses their relative effectiveness at improving older driver safety. A model licensing procedure has been developed in the USA and is currently being piloted in one US state. An Austroads research program to develop a similar procedure for Australasia, involving Australian and New Zealand road traffic authorities, is described. (A)
