Abstract

From 2003 onwards, the Dutch Ministry of Transport and Public Works has annually measured cyclists' lighting. The research results provide insight into the effects of public campaigns. In December 2007 and January 2008 new data were collected, During darkness (< 3 lux) and twilight (3 to 26 lux) the lighting of cyclists was visually registered, distinguishing front light and rear light, situations of non-lighting (switched off or non existent) and situations of lighting. Also, it was registered whether the bicycle lighting was according to existing and official regulations or not. During the December 2007/January 2008 research, lighting of in total 16,971 cyclists was registered. In December 2007/January 2008, 66% of all registered cyclists had their lights on front and rear. This means a statistically significant increase compared with the research of the previous year, when 62% of all registered cyclists had their lights on front and rear. It is remarkable that the share of cyclists with lighting according to the regulations has, since the previous research, has increased from 55% to 62% (statistically significant). This corresponds with 89% and 94% of all cyclists with lights on. The difference between the groups according to regulations and not according to regulations has decreased to 4%, from 7% and 8% in the previous two research years. Cities vary in bicycle lighting. On average, lighting is lower in the four largest Dutch cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, Utrecht). Also, lighting according to the regulations is lower in the four largest cities. Nonetheless, there is an increase in bicycle lighting in the four largest cities. There is a relationship between age class and bicycle lighting. Youngsters and young adults are relatively less lighted on the bicycle than older age groups. Moreover, older age groups develop more positively in terms of lighting, than younger age groups. During darkness (< 3 lux) cyclists more often use lighting than during twilight (3 to 26 lux). There is no difference between the morning and evening hours. (Author/publisher)
