Abstract

The Danish Transport Council is carrying out a study within the framework of the TransForsk - 94 (Transport Research 94) program for the purpose of casting light on the local impacts of a light rail system. The purpose of this report is to examine the impact of a light rail system on traffic safety with a focus on the bicycle. A case study has been conducted in Sheffield, England to shed light on many aspects of light rail effects on the local environment and this report is the result of a case study in Amsterdam, a city with bicycle traffic that is similar to Danish cities. The report starts with a general description of Amsterdam's traffic system and then focuses on bicycle safety. Bicycle safety is described generally for the entire country and then specifically for Amsterdam along the tramlines. Information for a case study at the street level is presented for two stretches of road in Amsterdam, where a tramline was introduced in 1992. The study is a comparison of the before situation with the after situation but is inconclusive, due to lack of specific accident data. Finally, there is a description and summary of the results of two Dutch investigations concerning unreported accidents, where the focus is on bicycle accidents and bicycle accidents on streets with rails. The data for this report stems from a series of interviews and reports collected in August, 1995.
