Abstract
The use of light rail in Karlsruhe to encourage the use of public transport, walking and cycling is described. Light rail vehicles coming from the regional areas have been adapted to run on the existing main lines so that there is no need for passengers to change. The `Karlsruhe model' is briefly discussed, the main aim of the chapter being to consider how it might be applied to other cities. Details are given of a) construction work required, b) service changes, c) fares, d) changes in demand and e) costs. The likely effects on the system of the proposed regionalisation of rail passenger transport in Germany are considered.
