Abstract

Ways to provide optimum visibility at crossings in order to enable pedestrians to cross the roads with the maximum amount of safety during the hours of darkness are assessed. Three initial uestions are discussed: 1) does existing road lighting provide a sufficiently high level of conspicuity of the crossing carpet and pedestrians on the crossing; 2) should the standard of illuminance provided by the existing lighting be increased, and 3) is supplementary lighting required.
