Abstract

A number of motorway widening strategies are described and the implications for the lighting engineer considered. The benefits of a well-designed motorway lighting system are listed. Lighting performance specification is considered in more detail and standards referred to. Aspects considered include: a) average road surface luminance; b) overall luminance uniformity; c) longitudinal luminance uniformity; and d) Threshold Increment. Different options for lighting standard motorway configurations are discussed and shown diagramatically. The environmental impact of motorway lighting systems is discussed. It is suggested that the availability of powerful computing facilities offers scope for high quality lighting design in the future.
