Abstract

In this paper, the author examines the differences between luminance (light falling on a surface) and luminance (light leaving a surface) as related to the design of lighting systems for optimum visibility under varying pavement reflectance conditions. Among other conclusions, he finds a significant need for further investigation of the light-reflecting properties of different types of pavements, both wet and dry. Comments given by J. Stuart Franklin and A. Kertvirtis are included in this paper.(See also B 581).
