Abstract

The principle of limit state design is the basis of many modern codes of practice. It attempts to provide a rational and integrated procedure for dealing with earlier empirical rules, working stress methods, plastic theory and techniques of probability and statistics. Some experiences in the use of the British bridge code BS 5400 are included.
