Abstract

Pavement design has grown increasingly theoretical, but there remain major problems that we have yet to resolve as our design methodologies mature. This paper examines some of the challenges we face in theoretical design of concrete pavements. Among the areas of concern are the limited types of pavement distress that are considered in theoretical designs, the ability of analytical models to represent the complexities of pavements in service, measurement of concrete strength, fatigue behaviour of concrete, and evaluating the effects of different load magnitudes.
