Abstract

From a traffic engineering point of view the location of the town of Sundsvall between two mountains creates problems. Traffic density increases and so do air pollution, congestion and parking problems. This, in combination with decreased accessibility, means that the inner city becomes less attractive. As a remedy public transport in the city must be improved. The project presented in this paper has found it technologically and economically feasible to introduce an aerial ropeway system. Claimed advantages are listed, some of them are: increased accessibility without car use, car parks on the outskirts of the city centre would be more attractive, it would contribute to the town scene. Two ropeway-cars would be coupled, each of ropeway-cars would be coupled, each of them could carry 8 to 12 passengers. It is suggested that the service would be running at 2 or 4 minute intervals. Finally, a cost benefit analysis in favour of an aerial cableway system is presented.
