The dependence of the accident rate on road width and the time when the road was planned and/or constructed has previously been studied by the Swedish Road Administration, and results indicated that narrow roads from the most recent decades (1960s and 1970s) for the period 1980-1984 display roughly the same accident rate as wide roads, and 9-metre roads have a higher accident rate than both narrow and wide roads. A more detailed study of the alignment of the different stretches of road was therefore considered to be of interest. The survey reported here covered 215 stretches of road. The data for each stretch of road has been supplemented with details of the alignment and the types of accident.
