Abstract

This article describes the installation and effect of a Linked MOVA (Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation) system of traffic signals at a busy motorway junction in the English Midlands, UK. Some carriageway resurfacing work was also carried out but the linked signals are seen as the determining factor in reducing traffic queues. Linked MOVA systems use detection loops in the carriageway to measure road conditions: electronic controllers at each intersection then communicate with each other to control signal timings and optimise traffic flow.
