Abstract

This was one of the 1998 TAC Environment Achievement Award Nominations (2). The City of Kamloops has led the province of BC and for the most part, Canada in the introduction of Liquid Anti-icing to their winter maintenance program. Their leadership has resulted in a large growth of users in British Columbia and several other Provinces withing Canada. Their anti-icing program has also led to significant environmental enhancements and cost savings. The City of Kamloops began to experiment with liquid anti-icing in the winter of 1995/96. A one-kilometer stretch of roadway on a steep hill within the city was treated and some promising results were witnessed. This experiment led to a partnership with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) over the next three winters to test the use of liquid anti-icing products and strategies for reductions in maintenance costs, accident reduction and environmental enhamcements.
