Abstract

This booklet recognises that the use of cars provides many benefits in today's society and that growth in car ownership will continue, but that it must be better managed and reflect environmental concerns. Britain's transport system has seen major changes during recent years, especially the increased involvement of the private sector in financing and running transport. However, its transport problems are worse than in other major European countries, and its archaic system of taxing and financing transport must be changed. Topics covered include: (1) attitudes of drivers, including Automobile Association (AA) members, women, and young, older and disabled drivers; (2) buying, servicing, taxing and insuring cars; (3) car crime; (4) road safety; (5) shopping and urban centres; (6) local buses and trains; (7) road works; (8) an efficient road network; (9) longer journeys; (10) bypasses; and (11) investing in transport. For each of these topics, several AA policy recommendations are made. They include: continued investment in road safety research, more road safety education and training for drivers and school children, and measures to reduce pollution from emissions and invest in public transport to make it more attractive.
