Abstract

This article gives an overview of the design and ongoing construction of a new road and bridge project traversing the Black Canyon gorge at the site of Hoover Dam on the Arizona-Nevada border. The new route will provide a bypass for through traffic from Arizona into Nevada and relieve concerns about congestion, safety, and security on the existing historic highway, while conforming to roadway design criteria for reduced air pollution. Sections are devoted to the project partnership efforts, a new innovative bridge design, and cultural and aesthetic concerns.
