Abstract

The definition of life style cannot be contained in a simple "formula" of words. At any rate one cannot expect that it is possible to cut down a concept as complex as life style into one or two sentences. It is far more important to elucidate actual methods and define concepts that offer potentials - so to speak - to think in the phenomenon. This is the essence of this report. It takes its basis in the classical theories on each individual, society and life style and uncovers factors that in a complex pattern interact and influence life styles, the way they emerge and function. Theorists such as Giddens, Bourdieu, Johansson, and Miegel are highlighted. Further, relevant empirical studies have been used to give examples of life style research. Through the whole review, life style has been maintained as a theoretical concept, while at the same time it has been demonstrated how life styles are incorporated in each individual - socially, in society and in the time of which we all take part. The report is meant as a theoretical and methodical springboard for future RfT life style research. (A)
