Abstract

It is shown that if the conservation of cars is the only conservation law valid for the description of traffic flow, then the Lighthill-Whitham theory of kinematic waves is the only possible macroscopic hydrodynamical description. A few general remarks are presented on the limits of validity of the macroscopic hydrodynamical description.
