Abstract

To set the scene for a half-day session on local street traffic and safety at the 10th ARRB Conference, this paper comments on four areas. These are: street functions and the problem of defining street classification; Australian local street management practice; safety as a motive for street planning and management; and implications for local street planning, design and management. If many of the current design and management ideas are to gain favour with the practitioners and the public, several important questions concerning these issues need to be resolved. (A)
