Abstract

This paper primarily discusses the developing use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) by London Transport (LT) Planning, and briefly considers some other relevant aspects of LT's work. LT uses GIS in: (1) its Underground railway and bus operations; (2) its ROUTES Travel Information System; and (3) within LT Planning, to coordinate service and demand data for multi-modal and strategic studies. The following aspects of LT Planning's GIS are described: (1) its approach to GIS development; (2) organising the data inputs; (3) preparing the GIS `front-end' development; (4) design work; (5) CenSel, the initial in-house application development, which processes Census data and views stations and bus stops on a road map; (6) future priorities, including foundation tasks and also likely to include the management of LT service and demand data; (7) the likely impact of the GIS; (8) monitoring bus speeds and stop arrival times; and (9) supporting research into the impacts of the Jubilee Line Extension. The following issues are also discussed: (1) costs and benefits of LT Planning's GIS development; (2) moving from departmental data towards corporate information; and (3) the relationship between business requirements and technological opportunities.
