Abstract

From 1984 to 1998 over 5,000 high school seniors from 30 states completed a survey before and after blood alcohol concentration limits were instituted in their states. This study examined the impacts of the lowered blood alcohol concentration limits on the drinking and driving behavior of these high school students. Results of the survey indicate that frequency of driving after 5 or more drinks, and driving after any amount of drinking decreased 23% and 19%, respectively. The lower BAC limits had no measurable effect on the total number of miles driven or on the overall amount of drinking of the subjects. (Author/publisher)
