Measurements of air pollution caused by different models of cars in different circumstances have led to the possibility of introducing some forecasting mathematical models by which the effect of traffic management on air pollution can be studied. These mathematical models can be combined with computer programs such as TRANSYT, CONTRAM, saturn and FLEXSYT and other more conventional programs. In particular urban traffic gives rise to a big emission of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon on deceleration, acceleration and when standing still with the engine running.
