Older traveler mobility is directly influenced by a person's ability to utilize transportation services efficiently and safely. This chapter aims to develop an appreciation for the process of transportation engineering design and the implications of several elements of the transportation system for elderly mobility. Beginning with the example of road design, engineering design is reviewed with an emphasis on the tools applied and the need for standardization through guidelines and policies. Several examples are then provided of proposed road design changes to accommodate older drivers and pedestrians better and more safely.
