Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to describe the Port-of-Entry Advanced Sorting System (PASS) Demonstration Project. The objective of this project is to research and demonstrate the feasibility of integrating state-of-the-art automatic vehicle identification (AVI), weigh-in-motion (WIM), automatic vehicle classification (AVC) and on-board information systems to identify, weigh, classify and direct selected heavy vehicles in advance of weigh stations and Port of Entry (POE's). During the demonstration, legally operating trucks, participating in the project will be directed to bypass the POE and the static scale weighing process, resulting in significant benefits for both the carrier and the POE.
