Abstract

This paper presents information on the types of cracks that can occur in asphaltic overlays together with modes of propagation. It defines the functions which are prerequisite to overcome crack propagation in these modes and describes the properties necessary for reinforcement to be effective. The role of stiff polymer grids in limiting crack propagation in all modes is highlighted. In addition, the paper describes the research carried out on reinforced asphalt with respect to reflection cracking over concrete joints, fatigue cracking, rutting and the appropriate physical properties for reinforcement. Four European projects, dating back to 1985, are used to illustrate the use of Tensar AR1 grid reinforcement. These are: (1) 1 km of fenland road in the UK overlaid with 120 mm in October 1985; (2) A section of the M1 motorway at Watford in the UK was overlaid with reinforced asphalt; (3) The M8 trunk road in the UK; and (4) The B5 near Brunsbuttel, Germany. The German title of this article is: Sanierung der Beton-Strassendecken Mittels mit Geonetz Verfestigten Asphaltbeton-Schichten.
