Abstract

Some of the maintenance requirements that will be necessary in the 1970's are projected and discussed. A comparison of the construction cost index with the maintenance cost index shows a relatively low rise in construction costs which is probably due to greater productivity by reason of improvement in both equipment and construction methods. Maintenance requirements are discussed in relationship to two categories of labour: General maintenance and traffic services. Bridge maintenance and inspection techniques must be vastly improved. In the field of traffic services, the new and additional activities that will be necessary are discussed. These include rest area maintenance, safety, maintenance personnel training, and maintenance management.
