Abstract

For more than twenty years, Eurostat has collected statistics on the transport of goods between regions within Member States. For road transport, these statistics were collected under two Council Directives (78/546/EEC and 89/462/EEC), which were replaced from 1999 onwards by a new Council Regulation (1172/98/EC). The adoption of this Regulation marked an important step forward in the evolution of Community transport statistics in the European Union. This regulation provides a legal base for the collection of a wide range of data on road freight transport. In addition by providing microdata from surveys of road freight operators, it lays the emphasis on quality and comparability of statistical information. After a transitional period statistics on inter-regional road transport between Member States as well as within Member States will be available. The paper provides details about the current data collection of road freight transport in the EU Member States. It furthermore outlines problems encountered in disseminating the results of the data collection, such as data validation, quality and issues related to confidentiality. Finally the most recent trends in road freight transport in Europe are described on the basis of tables and graphs. To conclude plans for the inclusion of Candidate countries are presented.
