Abstract

This paper will discuss recent advances in parking technology that are applicable to many types of parking facilities. The author will present several parking technology applications based on his parking management experience in the public and private sectors. Single-space parking guidance systems (SSPG) and pay on foot/credit card in/out systems are discussed, with special emphasis on the pay on foot/credit card in/out system that was recently installed at Portland International Airport. Parking plays an important role in determining the overall quality of a trip. Technology is now being developed to manage the parking process as part of an overall ITS strategy. A successful trip occurs with minimum delays, and parking should be optimized in much the same way ITS seeks to do for the roadway portion of any trip.
