Abstract

Devices available for preventing motorists driving into highway work zones are reviewed. Moveable concrete barriers can be easily moved from one lane to another by a transfer vehicle and are designed to minimise danger to the motorist. A range of mobile steel barriers are available with differing deflection properties. Barrier ends can be shielded with the GREAT CZ system. The TRITON Barrier is an easily deployed plastic water-filled, steel-reinforced barrier. Other water-filled barricades are less strong but provide better protection than cones. The successful use of truck-mounted attenuators (TMAs) at the beginning of road works is described. These are particularly valuable for moving operations such as road marking. Other products anticipated include robot shadow vehicles, intrusion alarms and portable speed bumps.
