Abstract

Bituminous Surface Treatments (BST) have been used since the early 1970's on Yukon Highways and the Alaska Highway in Northern British Columbia to provide an improved level of service to the motoring public. BSTs were initially used for dust control on gravel roads as an alternative to calcium chloride. Over the years, its role has increased and it is now used as an inexpensive paved surface on low volume roads and as an initial stage surface on fully designed pavement structures. This paper details the development of a management system for these surfaces. The elements of BST distress are discussed and a weighting system developed to allow the calculation of an overall distress parameter. Criteria for the selection Criteria for the selection of rehabilitation projects in the short term are discussed. (A)
