Abstract

The dual challenges of the transportation system are to move traffic both safely and efficiently. Although highways and motor vehicles are designed to operate safely at speeds traveled by most motorists, almost 1 in 3 traffic fatalities in the U.S. is related to speeding, either involving exceeding the posted speed limit or driving too fast for certain conditions. Because speeding is a complex problem involving many factors (personal behavior, roadway features, and enforcement strategies), the U.S. Department of Transportation organized a multidisciplinary, multiagency Speed Management Team (SMT) to deal with this problem. This article provides an overview of the structural makeup and outreach efforts of the SMT.
