Abstract

The Roads and Traffic Authority of New South Wales, Australia (RTA) commissioned a new Transport Management Centre (TMC) in Sydney which will manage Olympic road-based transport, and ultimately manage traffic operations on the entire state road network. The centre, commissioned in July 1999, replaced the Sydney Traffic Control Centre (STCC) and the Sydney Harbour Bridge Traffic Office (SHBTO). The TMC includes additional functionality to that of the other two centres, an expanded coverage area and a more customer-service oriented approach. The heart of the TMC is the transport operations room where RTA, Police and the public transport operators manage the road network and provide traveller information to stakeholders with sophisticated technical systems in (near) real time. Further, the centre interfaces with Police and Olympic command centres, private Motorway and tunnel operations rooms, and local government offices. (A*)
