Abstract
The Manual covers standards for traffic control devices including all signs, signals and markings likely to be found on streets or highways under a public authority. This edition incorporates all reviews approved by the Federal Highway Administrator and also continues a policy towards a broader use of symbols as alternatives to word messages. The specifications are provided under the following parts: (1) General provisions; (2) Signs; (3) Markings; (4) Signals; (5) Islands; (6) Traffic controls for street and highway construction, maintenance, utility and emergency operations; (7) Traffic controls for school areas; (8) Traffic control systems for railroad-highway grade crossings; and (9) Traffic controls for bicycle facilities.
