Abstract

While map databases continue to prove their value in navigation systems, another suite of applications is emerging. Digital map data is emerging as a predictive sensor input to driver assistance and vehicle control functions. This concept is currently being tested and developed in first and second generation systems in Japan, Europe, and the United States. Testing results are confirming the concept that highly accurate map data can facilitate and enhance fundamental vehicle tasks, driver convenience systems, and high-end safety systems. When coupled with vehicle positioning capabilities, one of the basic functions of in-vehicle navigation systems, a digital map database is also used to help improve the performance of existing technologies. This is accomplished through integration of a suite of sensor information, including digital map data, and providing a road preview to these various driver assistance and system functions in the vehicle.
