Aberdeenshire Council identified a need for more and better data on travel patterns; leading to a desire to collect more data on travel by all modes. This supports the objectives of Aberdeenshire's Local Transport Strategy and other policies. The Council identified potential to gather data fromreal journeys made by employees and residents using global positioning system (GPS) enabled technology. A technology review was undertaken followedby a trial of various technologies to assess their potential for travel data collection. The paper describes the technology, outcomes of the trial, and ways in which GPS devices could be further used in future.
